STRATEGY OF A CHAMPION

“He laughs at fear, afraid of nothing. He does not shy away from the sword… In frenzied excitement he eats up the ground. He cannot stand still when the trumpet sounds.” – Penny Chenery

Hearing this quote for the first time in the blockbuster movie “Secretariat” gave me chills…not because of the words themselves, but the context in which their meaning went unparalleled.

A lot of us today are plagued by the endless pursuit of victory; only to shy away from the finish line before us. We dream of being showered in a winner’s wreath of roses and trophies at our fingertips but we have no obvious direction to lead us there. So, the question is…what is the path to victory and the strategy of a champion?

I think the answer to this question lies in Ms. Chenery’s words.

To be a Champion :

  • We cannot fear – fear alone will lead to the destruction of our victories
  • We cannot shy away from the hardships leading to our triumphs within reach
  • Let your Excitement be the Engine that keeps you moving forward, because without a desire to race; we can never truly have a chance at winning.

And lastly…

  • Don’t. Stand. Still. Your desire to achieve what your heart desires should be so strong that it forces you to constantly press on. Our pursuit of victory should ignite a flame so deep within us that no obstacle could withstand it.
When I think about this story and the brutality of the triple crown race, Well…really any race, there is one strategy that shines amongst all the others. It’s called “Mastering the Curves”.

When most of us think about racing, we picture a straight line… Probably because we all raced our neighborhood friends down the block growing up, but in reality, there are LONG curves on the track. Many of us know how to master the straight and narrow, but when it comes to the curve; we loose our momentum and are forced to watch our competitors shift into the lead. In any race, those who master the hardest parts of the track are the ones getting a winner’s wreath around their neck.

So stop thinking about the finish line for one second and think about the “why”… Ms. Chenery said, “This is about life being ahead of you and you run at it! Because you never know how far you can run unless you run.”

So whatever race you’re running, whatever dream you have…you now have the strategies to become a champion. BUT, win or lose…at least you discovered how far you could run.
